Hail, chinooks and long winters. A roof that cannot rust.
Alberta weather is hail in summer, chinooks and deep cold in winter, and wind and strong sun all year. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where it has limits.
Hail
Impact-rated, and honest about it
Two Calgary hailstorms show what is at stake: the storm of June 13, 2020 caused nearly $1.2 billion in insured damage, and the storm of August 5, 2024 caused $3.25 billion, the second-costliest insured disaster in Canadian history. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. No roof is hail-proof, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).
A chinook can lift a winter day from well below freezing to above it within hours, then the cold comes back. Each cycle loosens asphalt granules and curls shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rust. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with no exposed fastener, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.
Snow
Light on the framing, built for the load
Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile, a fraction of concrete tile. That leaves the structure's capacity for what an Alberta winter puts on it: snow. Smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.
Ice dams
We look at the attic, not just the roof
Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.
Wildfire
Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly
FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises avoiding wood shakes and shingles. Under ASTM E108 (CAN/ULC-S107 in Canada) a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel: on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof. If your home backs onto forest, ask us to quote the Class A assembly.
Alberta is sunny, and the sun is stronger at elevation. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years and has CRRC-rated solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.44 depending on colour, and thermal emittance from 0.83 to 0.86.
What matters where you live
Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks and Strathmore: hail in summer and chinooks all winter. Calgary is where we have installed more roofs than anywhere else.
Hail season
Impact-rated Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Tile panels (UL 2218 Class 4, listed by Intertek). No roof is hail-proof; ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof.
Chinooks
Snow melts and refreezes many times a winter. Nothing in an aluminum panel to crack, curl or soak up water.
Older homes and infills
The look of slate or cedar on an older bungalow or a new infill, at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre.
Condo and townhouse boards
One profile and colour across a complex, with the product documents and warranty terms a condominium board asks for.
Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Fort Saskatchewan and Leduc: long, cold winters, deep snow and summer storms.
Long winters
Light on the framing under months of snow, with snow guards planned at the quote.
Ice dams
They start in the attic. We look at insulation and ventilation with you at the estimate.
Hail season
Impact-rated Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Tile panels (UL 2218 Class 4, listed by Intertek). No roof is hail-proof; ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof.

Freeze-thaw
Nothing in an aluminum panel to crack, curl or soak up water.
Medicine Hat, Brooks and Redcliff: hot, sunny summers, hail and open-prairie wind.
Summer sun
Lighter colours reflect more of the summer sun; how much that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and ventilation.

We install the Interlock® aluminum roofing system on Alberta homes, acreages and condo and townhouse complexes, from Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat to Red Deer, Edmonton and Grande Prairie: interlocking panels locked on four sides with the fasteners out of the weather, made in Canada at the Interlock plant in Delta, BC, and installed by our own Alberta company from our office in Calgary.
Our town pages, local photos and install counts are on our two market sites: one for Calgary, Central and Southern Alberta, one for Edmonton and Northern Alberta. Same company, same Calgary office, same crews, same warranties.
Every Interlock® panel we install is manufactured in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant at 9969 River Way in Delta, BC.

Will an Interlock roof stand up to Alberta hail?
It is built for it, but no roof is hail-proof. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest class in that standard, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Very large hail can still dent metal. The manufacturer's material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and the labour warranty excludes hail, so hail damage is a matter for your home insurance. Some insurers weigh impact resistance and some do not: ask yours, and we will give you the listing and warranty documents they may want.
Which parts of Alberta do you install in?
All of them, from one office in Calgary. We work in Metro Calgary and Metro Edmonton; Central Alberta (Red Deer, Lacombe, Olds, Sylvan Lake and Rocky Mountain House); Southern Alberta (Lethbridge, Taber, Cardston, Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and Claresholm); Medicine Hat, Brooks and Redcliff; the Foothills and Crowsnest Pass; Banff, Canmore and the Bow Valley; the Peace Country (Grande Prairie, Peace River and Slave Lake); the West Country (Edson, Hinton and Whitecourt); and East-Central Alberta (Vegreville, Vermilion, Wainwright and Lloydminster). Town pages are on our two market sites: calgarymetalroofing.com for Calgary, Central and Southern Alberta, the Foothills and the Bow Valley, and edmontonmetalroofing.com for Edmonton and Northern Alberta. Not sure about your address? Ask us.
What warranties come with an Interlock roof in Alberta?
Two. The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing, gives the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum material and its factory finish: it runs for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, is transferable once, and excludes workmanship. We, Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., give a 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the workmanship of the installation, for the purchaser who lives in the home. They are separate documents with separate terms, and you can read both in full before you buy.
Do you tear off my old roof?
Usually, and always for cedar shingles or shakes, concrete tile and natural slate. A single layer of asphalt shingles may be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. We tell you which applies to your house at the consultation, and it is part of the fixed price in writing.
How much does a metal roof cost in Alberta?
It depends on your roof, so we price each house after a free consultation instead of publishing a number. The biggest factors are roof area, pitch and complexity (valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys), what has to come off, the profile you choose, and options such as snow guards or the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly. You get a fixed price in writing, and any current offer is shown on this page.
Free, no obligation
Let's plan your last roof.
A free consultation on Zoom or at your home: we go through profiles and colours with you, measure the roof, and give you a fixed price in writing. No pressure, and an honest date for the install.
